Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In the Sangat, suffering loses its address. Just seeing such people brings a deep, happy peace.
Blemishes fade. The dark places lose their pull. You are happy here - and unafraid of what comes after here.
The long-separated are brought back to the One. The heart's deepest wishes ripen into fruit.
No one leaves the Sangat empty-handed. The One Himself lives in such hearts. Nanak says: just listening to their sweet words, you are carried.
No one who comes to the Sangat leaves with empty hands.
Saadh kai sang na birthaa jaavai — in the Sangat, no one goes away empty. Other doors in the world sometimes turn a seeker away. This one never does. It is like a friend's kitchen where there is always a plate for you, whenever you show up.
Saadhsang bichhurat har maylaa — those who were separated are joined again with the One. Gurbani often pictures the soul as a bride missing her beloved. That missing is called viraha, the ache of being apart. Here the long separation ends, not on a far mountaintop but in a gathering of good people.
The way you are rescued could not be gentler. Naanak udhrai saadh sun rasai — by listening to the sweet words of the Holy, you are carried across. Not by a hard test. Not by a special ceremony. Just by listening. This is Suniai, deep listening, the great doorway of Japji Sahib. Here it is all you need to walk in.
What is the kindest thing anyone has ever said to you - and what did it save you from?
