The Labels Differ; the Resident Is One

paarbarahm kay saglay thaa-o.
All places belong to the Supreme Lord God.
jit jit ghar raakhai taisaa tin naa-o.
According to the homes in which they are placed, so are His creatures named.
aapay karan karaavan jog.
He Himself is the Doer, the Cause of causes.
parabh bhaavai so-ee fun hog.
Whatever pleases God, ultimately comes to pass.
pasri-o aap ho-ay anat tarang.
He Himself is All-pervading, in endless waves.
lakhay na jaahi paarbarahm kay rang.
The playful sport of the Supreme Lord God cannot be known.
jaisee mat day-ay taisaa pargaas.
As the understanding is given, so is one enlightened.
paarbarahm kartaa abinaas.
The Supreme Lord God, the Creator, is eternal and everlasting.
sadaa sadaa sadaa da-i-aal.
Forever, forever and ever, He is merciful.
simar simar naanak bha-ay nihaal. ||8||9||
Remembering Him, remembering Him in meditation, O Nanak, one is blessed with ecstasy. ||8||9||

In plain words

Every place there is belongs to the One - and each of us gets named after the little house we were placed in.

The One is the Doer, the Cause behind causes. What pleases the One is what finally happens.

He surges through everything in endless waves - a playfulness no one can map.

As understanding is given, so we come to see. The Maker is forever - and forever merciful. Nanak says: remembering, remembering, a person is filled with joy.

The labels come from the houses we were placed in - the Resident in every house is One.
The deeper layer

The names are different, but the One living in every house is the same.

After all the titles, the ending steps back to show the whole board. Paarbarahm kay saglay thaa-o — every place belongs to the Supreme One. Jit jit ghar raakhai taisaa tin naa-o — each one is named after the house it is placed in.

That is the whole song in two lines. Vaishnaav, Bhagaautee, Pandit, servant, even Jivan Mukta: names given by where you are placed. They are all houses on one Owner's land. The labels differ. The One living inside is the same. Raag Maajh teaches this too, where many paths lead to the One. So does Raag Aasaa, with its six schools and one Teacher.

Think of kids in a school wearing different team shirts. Blue team, red team, green team. They all belong to one school.

Sukhmani says the big truths calmly. The One is the only Doer. What pleases the One is what finally happens. Pasri-o aap ho-ay anat tarang — the One spreads out in endless waves. One ocean, countless wave shapes. No wave is made of separate water.

Jaisee mat day-ay taisaa pargaas — as understanding is given, so the light comes. That quietly ends every contest over who is most spiritual. Even insight is a gift, not a prize.

What is left for anyone in any house is the last instruction, said twice with tenderness. Simar simar — remember, remember. And be filled with joy.

A Question to Sit With

People get called by their religion, country, caste, team. What would change if you saw the same One living in every house?
