In plain words

A hundred moons could rise, and a thousand suns could shine.

Even with all that light, it would still be pitch dark without the Guru.

The most important kind of light isn't the kind that fills a room — it's the understanding that clears the fog inside.
The deeper layer

The Second Guru, Guru Angad, says the most important light is not the kind that fills the sky. It is the kind that clears the fog inside.

Jay sa-o chandaa ugvahi sooraj charheh hajaar — if a hundred moons rose and a thousand suns came up. Imagine that blaze of light!

Gur bin ghor andhaar — without the Guru, it would still be pitch dark.

How can that be? Because the darkness meant here is not the kind sunlight can fix. It is the fog inside: not understanding, confusion, a heart with nothing wise to steer by. No outside brightness can reach it. Only the inner light of understanding, the Guru, can.

Think of a lost hiker at noon. The sun is blazing, but they still do not know the way home. What they need is a map, not more sunlight. The most important kind of seeing is not done with the eyes.

A Question to Sit With

What kind of 'light' helps you when you feel confused inside, even in a bright room?
