What Makes a Person Shine Is Love, Not Rank

The ones who truly love shine beautiful at the One's door, whatever their rank in the world.
I'm just the One's humble singer, counted low by society — while others boast of high birth. But I only want to be near those who love the One.
This Pauree contains a quietly revolutionary line. Guru Nanak calls himself the Lord's minstrel, of low social status — dhaadhee — a humble singer — while others call themselves high caste. In a society organized around caste rank, he sets it aside entirely: what makes a person beautiful at the One's door is not their birth but their love. And his one desire is telling: I seek those who meditate on You — I want to be near the loving, whatever their rank. For a child this is a foundational Sikh teaching: your worth and your company are measured by your heart, never by status, birth, or class. The humble singer stands taller at the door than the proud noble.
