Rank and Power Count for Nothing in the End

mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
vadee so vajag naankaa sachaa vaykhai so-ay.
Evil actions become publicly known; O Nanak, the True Lord sees everything.
sabhnee chhaalaa maaree-aa kartaa karay so ho-ay.
Everyone makes the attempt, but that alone happens which the Creator Lord does.
agai jaat na jor hai agai jee-o navay.
In the world hereafter, social status and power mean nothing; hereafter, the soul is new.
jin kee laykhai pat pavai changay say-ee kay-ay. ||3||
Those few, whose honor is confirmed, are good. ||3||

In plain words

The wrong we do doesn't stay hidden — the One sees it all clearly.

In the end, rank and power count for nothing; what stands is only real, honest goodness.

Rank and power count for nothing in the end — the one thing that lasts is real, honest goodness.
The deeper layer

A short, clarifying shalok: evil actions become publicly known — the True One sees everything. You can hide from people for a while, but not from the One who sees clearly; and secrets have a way of surfacing. And the great equalizer: hereafter, social status and power mean nothing — all the ranks people scramble for don't travel past the end of life. What does stand is confirmed honor — real, tested goodness. It's the Vaar's steady leveling: the things people chase to feel important (status, power) evaporate, and the one thing that lasts is whether you were actually good. So put your effort where it counts.

A Question to Sit With

If status and power don't last, what's actually worth working hard to build in yourself?
