All the Holy Marks Are Empty Without the One Within
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You can read all the prayers, wear all the holy marks and beads, and strike all the right poses —
but if you don't actually know the One in your heart, all the outer show is empty. Real understanding comes through true wisdom, with a sincere heart.
The shalok lists a whole wardrobe of outer religiosity — reading and debating, worshipping stones, sitting still like a stork pretending to meditate, wearing the rosary, the forehead mark, the turban, reciting the set prayers. None of these are mocked for their own sake; the point is the gap between the display and the heart: if you knew the nature of God, you'd know all these beliefs and rituals are in vain without the real thing. It's the Vaar's drumbeat once more — the costume is not the character. What actually works is meditating with deep faith, a sincere turning of the heart, which comes through the Guru. You can wear every holy thing and still be far; or wear nothing special and be near, if the heart is true.
What's the difference between looking religious or good, and actually being sincere inside?
