Every Person Is Born From a Woman; Honor Her
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
From a woman we are born; a woman carries us and raises us; we grow up loved by women and joined in friendship to them.
From women, whole generations come. So how could anyone call woman 'bad'? From her, even kings are born! Without women, there would be no one at all.
This is one of the most celebrated verses in the entire Guru Granth Sahib — a ringing defense of women written five centuries ago, in a time and place where women were widely treated as lesser. Guru Nanak lays out the plain truth: from woman we are born; within woman we are formed; to woman we are joined in love and friendship; from woman come the generations. Every single person owes their very existence to a woman. And then the question that answers itself: so why call her bad? From her, kings are born! — without woman, there would be no one at all. It is a complete demolition of the idea that women are somehow lower or 'impure.' For Prabhjyot's boys growing up today, this is a foundational teaching to carry: women are to be honored, never looked down on — and a tradition they belong to said so, boldly, long before the world caught up. The verse ends by blessing the mouth that praises — radiant faces in the True Court belong to those who speak goodness, women and men alike.
Why is it so important to treat girls and women with the same respect as anyone else?
