Don't Call Anyone Bad, and Don't Puff Up
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Everyone belongs to the One; each receives the fruit of their own actions.
Since none of us stays here forever, why puff yourself up with pride? Don't call anyone bad — really understand this — and don't waste your breath arguing with those set on foolishness.
The Pauree offers two pieces of gentle wisdom. First, humility: since no one remains in this world forever, what's the point of ruining yourself with pride? Arrogance is especially silly given how briefly we're all here. Second, and central to the whole tradition, mercy: do not call anyone bad — read these words and understand. It's not that actions can't be harmful; it's that no person should be written off as simply 'bad,' because everyone belongs to the One. And a practical tip: don't argue with those bent on foolishness — some quarrels aren't worth having. Stay humble, refuse to condemn people, and don't burn yourself up in pointless fights.
What's the difference between saying an action was wrong and deciding a whole person is 'bad'?
