Loving Only When Pleased Isn't Really Love

salok mehlaa 2.
Shalok, Second Mehl:
ayh kinayhee aaskee doojai lagai jaa-ay.
What sort of love is this, which clings to duality?
naanak aasak kaaNdhee-ai sad hee rahai samaa-ay.
O Nanak, he alone is called a lover, who remains forever immersed in absorption.
changai changa kar mannay mandai mandaa ho-ay.
But one who feels good only when good is done for him, and feels bad when things go badly
- do not call him a lover. He trades only for his own account. ||1||

In plain words

What kind of love only shows up when things are going your way?

A real lover stays devoted through good and bad alike. Someone who only feels loving when they're treated well isn't truly loving — they're just looking out for themselves.

Loving someone only when they please you isn't really love — real love stays steady through good and bad.
The deeper layer

The Second Guru asks a piercing question about the nature of love: what sort of love is this, which clings to duality? — meaning love that flips on and off depending on how you're treated. And he draws the line clearly: one who feels good only when good is done for him, and feels bad when things go badly — do not call him a lover; he trades only for his own account. That's not love; it's a transaction — I'll be nice to you as long as you're nice to me. Real love stays — through the pleasant and the hard, unconditional. For a child this is a deep and grown-up distinction: loving someone only when they please you isn't really loving them; it's loving yourself. True love holds steady on both the good days and the bad.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between loving someone and just liking how they make you feel?
