Salok Sehskritee, Salok 16 — Everything Has Two Sides

janmaN ta marnaN harkhaN ta sogaN bhogaN ta rogaN.
If there is birth, then there is death. If there is pleasure, then there is pain. If there is enjoyment, then there is disease.
oonchaN ta neechaN naanHaa so moochaN.
If there is high, then there is low. If there is small, then there is great.
raajaN ta maanaN abhimaanaN ta heenaN.
If there is power, then there is pride. If there is egotistical pride, then there will be a fall.
parvirat maargaN vartant binaasanaN.
Engrossed in worldly ways, one is ruined.
gobind bhajan saaDh sangayn asthiraN naanak bhagvant bhajnaasnaN. ||12||
Meditating and vibrating on the Lord of the Universe in the Company of the Holy, you shall become steady and stable. Nanak vibrates and meditates on the Lord God. ||12||

In plain words

Where there is birth, there is death. Where there is joy, there is sorrow. Where there is pleasure, there is sickness.

Where there is high, there is low. What is small becomes great.

Where there is power, there is pride. Where there is pride, there is a fall.

Lost in the ways of the world, a person is ruined.

Singing of the Lord of the World in the Sangat, you become steady. Nanak says: I sing of the One and remember the One.

Ride the waves and they toss you; root below them and you are steady.
The deeper layer

Every high in life comes with its low, and a heart rooted in the One stops being thrown about by them.

The salok sets pairs side by side: janma ta marna, birth and death; harkha ta soga, joy and sorrow; bhoga ta roga, pleasure and sickness; raaja ta maana, power and pride; abhimaana ta heena, pride and a fall. Parvirat maargan: living only by these swings, a person is ruined.

Gobind bhajan saaDh sangayn asthiran: singing of the One in the Sangat, a person becomes steady. The waves still come, and they no longer throw you.

A Question to Sit With

When your feelings swing high and low, where could you drop an anchor so the swings do not throw you?
