Salok Sehskritee, Salok 32 — Words That Cannot Move You

ਤਿਰਸਕਾਰ ਨਹ ਭਵੰਤਿ ਨਹ ਭਵੰਤਿ ਮਾਨ ਭੰਗਨਹ ॥
tiraskaar nah bhavant nah bhavant maan bhangnah.
They pay no attention to dishonor or disrespect.
ਸੋਭਾ ਹੀਨ ਨਹ ਭਵੰਤਿ ਨਹ ਪੋਹੰਤਿ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੁਖਨਹ ॥
sobhaa heen nah bhavant nah pohant sansaar dukhnah.
They are not bothered by gossip; the miseries of the world do not touch them.

gobind naam japant mil saaDh sangah naanak say paraanee sukh baasnah. ||28||
Those who join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and chant the Name of the Lord of the Universe - O Nanak, those mortals abide in peace. ||28||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Being looked down on does not trouble them, and being shamed does not trouble them.

Losing their good name does not trouble them, and the sorrows of the world do not touch them.

Nanak says: those who join the Sangat and repeat the Naam of the Lord of the World live in peace.

Rooted deep, insults land but cannot move you.
The deeper layer

Those who remember the One in the Sangat keep a peace that put-downs and gossip cannot reach.

Tiraskaar nah bhavant: being looked down on does not bother them. Nah bhavant maan bhangnah: being shamed does not bother them. Sobhaa heen: losing their good name does not bother them. Nah pohant sansaar dukhnah: the world's sorrows do not get hold of them.

Gobind naam japant mil saaDh sangah: they join the Sangat and repeat the Naam. Sukh baasnah: they live in peace. The words of others still reach them, and cannot move them off their ground.

A Question to Sit With

When someone says something unkind, what helps you feel steady instead of shaken?
