Salok Sehskritee, Salok 33 — The Gentle Army
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The holy people are an army of brave warriors no one can defeat. Their armor is humility.
Their weapons are the praises of the Lord of the World that they sing. Their shield in the hand is the Guru's Word.
The horses, chariots and elephants they ride are their understanding of the One's path.
They walk without fear through the armies of their enemies, and charge at them with songs of praise.
Nanak says: they win over the whole world, and bring the five thieves inside under control.
The bravest army wears humility for armor and fights with songs of praise, and its enemies are the thieves inside.
Sainaa saaDh samooh soor ajitan: the holy people are an army no one can beat. Sannaahan tan nimartaah: humility is the armor on their bodies. AavDhah gun gobind ramnan: singing the One's praises is their weapon. Ot gur sabad kar charamneh: the Guru's Word is the shield in their hand.
Bichartay nirbh-yan satar sainaa: they walk fearlessly through the enemy army. The enemies are panch taskarahi, the five thieves inside: selfish wanting, anger, greed, clinging and ego. The whole battle happens within.
What is one 'pull inside' you — like anger or wanting to show off — that would take real courage to work with?
