Salok Sehskritee, Salok 34 — Do Not Build on the Shade

marig tarisnaa ganDharab nagraN darum chhaa-yaa rach duramtih.
Misled by evil-mindedness, mortals are engrossed in the mirage of the illusory world, like the passing shade of a tree.
tatah kutamb moh mith-yaa simrant naanak raam raam naamah. ||30||
Emotional attachment to family is false, so Nanak meditates in remembrance on the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam. ||30||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Led by a mistaken mind, people get lost in the world, which is like a mirage, like a city seen in the clouds, like the passing shade of a tree.

Clinging to family is false too. So Nanak says: I remember the Naam of the One, Raam, Raam.

Do not build your life on the shade — it moves.
The deeper layer

The world we cling to passes like the shade of a tree, so remembering the One is the steady ground.

Marig trisnaa: a mirage, the water a thirsty deer sees in the desert that is not there. GanDharab nagran: a city seen in the clouds, gone in a moment. Darum chhaa-yaa: the shade of a tree, which moves as the sun crosses the sky. Rach durmatih: a mistaken mind builds its life on these.

Kutamb moh mith-yaa: clinging to family as if it would last forever is false too. Simrant naanak raam raam naamah: so Nanak remembers the Naam, Raam, Raam.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have built a lot of your happiness on that might be more like shade than solid ground?
