Salok Sehskritee, Salok 35 — Even the Foolish Grow Wise
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I do not have the treasure of wisdom of the Vedas, the old holy books. I do not have the gift of singing the praises of the Naam.
I do not have a beautiful voice to sing jewel-like melodies. I am not quick, clever or smart.
By good fortune and hard work, the riches of the world are gained. Nanak says: in the Sangat, even a foolish person becomes wise.
In the Sangat, even someone with no learning or talent grows wise.
The speaker is honest and humble. I do not have the wisdom of the Vedas, the old holy books. I have no gift for praise. I cannot sing beautifully. I am not clever or quick.
That is not putting himself down. It is just telling the truth. Then comes the turn. Money comes from luck and hard work, the verse says. But saaDhsang khal panditah: in the Sangat, even someone who knows very little grows wise.
It is like joining a good team. You may start as the least skilled player. But practice beside good players, and you get better without even noticing. Growth is not only for the gifted. It comes from the company you keep and the way you face.
What is something you feel you are 'not good enough' at? Who is the kind of company that might help you grow anyway?
