In plain words

The beads around my neck are singing the Naam of the One, Raam, Raam. Love for the One is my quiet prayer.

My tongue speaks this most wonderful Word. It carries me across, and brings joy to my eyes.

The truest practice is worn on the inside.
The deeper layer

Remembering the Naam is the bead necklace, and love is the prayer, worn on the inside.

Kanth ramneey raam raam maalaa: singing the Naam, Raam, Raam, is the maalaa, the string of prayer beads, around the neck. Hasat ooch praym Dhaarnee: love held high is the quiet prayer. Jeeh bhan jo utam salok: the tongue speaks the highest Word. UDharnan nain nandnee: it carries a person across and brings joy to the eyes.

The very first salok of Sehskritee spoke of beads and holy marks worn only for show. Here each outer practice finds its inner form.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you can carry on the inside — a kind of quiet remembering — that no one else can see but that changes how you feel?
