Salok Sehskritee, Salok 42 — The Creator of All Is My Creator Too

ਸਰਬ ਸੀਲ ਮਮੰ ਸੀਲੰ ਸਰਬ ਪਾਵਨ ਮਮ ਪਾਵਨਹ ॥

He blesses all with humility; He has blessed me with humility as well. He purifies all, and He has purified me as well.
ਸਰਬ ਕਰਤਬ ਮਮੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਪ ਛੇਪ ਨ ਲਿਪ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ॥੩੮॥
sarab kartab mamaN kartaa naanak layp chhayp na lip-yatai. ||38||
The Creator of all is the Creator of me as well. O Nanak, no blame or stain sticks to Him. ||38||

In plain words

The One blesses everyone with humility, and has blessed me with humility too. The One makes everyone pure, and has made me pure too.

Nanak says: the Creator of all is my Creator too, and no blame or stain ever sticks to the One.

The good in you is a gift, the same gift the One gives everyone.
The deeper layer

Whatever goodness a person has, humility or a clean heart, comes from the same One who gives it to everyone.

Sarab seel: humility for all, and humility for me. Purity for all, and purity for me. The One who made everything, kartaa, made me too.

This keeps pride away. If the good in me is a gift, and the same gift is in everyone, there is no reason to look down on anyone. It also keeps me from thinking little of myself: the gift is real. And layp chhayp na lip-yatai: no stain sticks to the One who gives it.

A Question to Sit With

Think of something good about yourself. How might it change things to see it as a gift you share with others rather than something that makes you better than them?
