The moon-god is not cool and calm, nor is the white sandalwood tree.
ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਸੀਤ ਰੁਤੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੩੯॥

The winter season is not cool; O Nanak, only the Holy friends, the Saints, are cool and calm. ||39||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The moon is not cool and calm, and neither is the white sandalwood tree.

Winter is not cool either. Nanak says: only the holy friends, the saints, are cool and calm.

The deepest calm is found near people at peace in the One.
The deeper layer

The deepest calm comes from being near people who are settled in the One.

Seetla means cool. In Gurbani, being cool means being at peace inside, free of the heat of anger and worry. The moon, sandalwood paste and the winter season were the coolest things people knew. Each is cool only on the outside, and only for a while.

The saadh, the holy friends, carry a calm that lasts. Being near them cools you down inside, the way stepping into shade cools you on a hot day.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone whose calm rubs off on you when you are near them? What is it about them?
