In plain words

O Lord of the Universe, Master of my breath, Treasure of mercy, Guru of the world!

O You who take away the fever of the world, full of compassion — take away all my pain.

O kind One, able to give shelter, Master of the humble — be kind to me.

Nanak prays: whether my body is healthy or weak, let me remember You — Raam, Daamodar, Maadhav.

Good days or hard days, keep hold of the One.
The deeper layer

Whatever kind of day the body is having, the prayer is to keep remembering the One.

The salok calls on the One by many names: Master of the breath, Treasure of mercy, Guru of the world, the One who cools the fever of the world. It asks for pain to be taken away and for kindness.

Its heart is the last line: sareer savasth kheen sam-ay, whether the body is healthy or worn out, let me remember You. Raam, Daamodar and Maadhav are old, loving names for the divine from Hindu tradition, used here with respect. The prayer asks less for an easy life and more for remembrance that stays steady through every kind of day.

A Question to Sit With

When things are going badly, what is the one thing you want to hold onto no matter what?
