In plain words

The Supreme One protects my head and forehead. The Transcendent One protects my hands and body.

My Master, the Lord of the World, keeps my soul safe. The Lord of the Universe keeps my wealth and my feet safe.

The kind Guru protects everything, and destroys my fear and pain.

The One loves those who love back, and is the Master of those who have no master. Nanak says: I have come to the shelter of the undying One.

Head to foot, inside and out, you are looked after.
The deeper layer

Every part of me, head to foot, inside and out, is in the One's care.

The speaker names every part. The One guards my head and forehead. The One guards my hands and body. The One keeps my soul safe, and my wealth, and my feet. The kind Guru protects all of it, and takes away fear and pain.

Think of a parent tucking a blanket around a child, from the shoulders down to the toes. Nothing is left out.

The verse ends with shelter. The One is the Lover of those who love back, and the Master of those with no master. This does not promise that nothing hard will ever happen. It means being held through whatever comes. The quiet worry inside can finally rest.

A Question to Sit With

Where in your body do you feel worry? What would it feel like to sense that you are held, even there?
