Salok Sehskritee, Salok 9 — Names for the One Beyond Names
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O Glorious One, Undying, full of every goodness, Perfect, and so very kind,
deep beyond measure, high above all, knowing everything, without end.
You love the ones who serve You. Your feet are a place of rest.
Master of those with no master, helper of the helpless — Nanak says: I come to You for shelter.
The One is bigger than every name we give, and still close to anyone who has no one.
It starts with a waterfall of names. Glorious. Endless. Perfect. Very kind. Deep. High. All-knowing. Without limit. Each one is true, and none of them is big enough.
Then it lands somewhere soft. The One is the Lover of those who love back. The One is anaath naathay, the Master of those with no master. The helper of the helpless.
Think of a lighthouse. It is huge and strong, taller than anything around it. But its light is meant for the smallest boat lost at sea. The One's feet, the verse says, are bisraam, a place of rest, and Nanak comes to them for shelter.
Who do you turn to when you feel like you have no one? What would it feel like to know there is always somewhere to turn?
