Savaiye in praise of Guru Ram Das, Verse 14 — when a heart is that steady, trouble cannot stick
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Tell me, how could pain or wrongdoing cling to someone who repeats the Naam the True Guru gives, with one-pointed love, and holds it firm?
When the One, the boat that carries us across, gives a glance of grace even for a moment, a person thinks on the Word in the heart, and craving and anger are wiped away.
The Guru gives to all beings. He speaks the wisdom of the One no one can reach, and keeps the One in mind day and night, never sleeping even for a moment.
Seeing him, poverty goes away and the treasure of the Naam is found. The Guru's wisdom washes away the dirt of bad thinking.
Tell me, how could pain or wrongdoing cling to someone who repeats the Naam the True Guru gives, with one-pointed love, and holds it firm?
Pain and wrongdoing find nothing to cling to in someone who holds the Naam with a whole heart.
The question comes twice: kaho kat hovai, "tell me, how could it happen?" Hard times may still come, yet trouble finds nothing to grab. Think of rain on a raincoat. It falls, but it rolls right off.
Darisat Dhaarai is the glance of grace. Even one glance, for a single moment, is enough. Then the Word settles in the heart, and kaam and kroDh, craving and anger, cool down.
The Guru gives to every living being. He speaks wisdom about the One no one can reach, and keeps the One in mind day and night. Seeing him, want goes away and the treasure of the Naam is found. His wisdom washes the mind clean of bad thinking.
What helps your mind feel undivided instead of pulled in ten directions?
