Savaiye in praise of Guru Ram Das, Verse 15 — no one can measure the One
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Faith and the karma of good deeds come from the Perfect True Guru.
The Siddhas, the holy people, the silent sages, angels and humans all long to serve him. Through the Word, the best of all, they are lovingly tuned to the One.
Who can know how far You reach? You are the fearless, formless One. You speak what cannot be spoken, and only You understand it.
O world, lost in doubt: keep the One in mind through the Guru's teaching. You will be set free from the round of births and deaths, and death's punishment will not touch you.
O foolish mind, think on this, and repeat the Naam day and night. Faith and the karma of good deeds come from the Perfect True Guru.
Faith and good deeds both come from the Perfect True Guru, and no one can measure the One.
Fun jaanai ko tayraa apaar, who can know Your limits, carries the awe at the heart of these Savaiye. The verse speaks to the man, the mind, calling it mugaDh, foolish or unknowing, the way you might speak to a child who is confused. It warns that a mind lost in doubt stays caught in the round of births and deaths, and promises that the Guru's teaching sets it free, so that death's punishment does not touch it.
When has doubt felt like a fog to you? What helped it lift?
