It is death to forget the Lord of the Universe.
ਜੀਵਣੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਵਣਹ ॥

It is life to meditate on the Name of the Lord.

The Lord is found in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy,
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਣਹ ॥੧੫॥
naanak har poorab likh-neh. ||15||
O Nanak, by pre-ordained destiny. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

To forget the Lord of the World is death.

To remember the One's Naam is life.

The One is found in the Sangat.

Nanak says: this comes by what the One wrote long ago.

Remembering the One is what it feels like to be fully alive.
The deeper layer

Forgetting the One is like dying, and remembering the One is being alive.

Marna(n) bisrana(n) gobindah: forgetting the Lord of the World is death. Jeevana(n) har naam Dha-yaavaneh: remembering the Naam is life. The death here is the dullness of a life cut off from the One, while the body goes on.

Labh-na(n) saaDh sangayn: the One is found in the company of the holy. Har poorab likh-neh: by what was written before, the destiny the One sets down.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel most awake and alive?
