Gaathaa, Salok 23 — the One that was, is, and always will be
ਹੋਯੋ ਹੈ ਹੋਵੰਤੋ ਹਰਣ ਭਰਣ ਸੰਪੂਰਣਃ ॥
hoyo hai hovanto haran bharan sampooran-a.
God was, is, and shall always be. He sustains and destroys all.
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਤਮ ਜਾਣੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਾਰਣੰ ॥੨੩॥
saaDhoo satam jaano naanak pareet kaarnaN. ||23||
Know that these Holy people are true, O Nanak; they are in love with the Lord. ||23||

The One was, is, and always will be. The One keeps everything going and takes everything away.
Nanak says: know that the holy are true, because they are in love with the One.
The One was, is, and always will be, and the holy are true because they love the One.
The One was here before anything, is here now, and will always be.
Hoyo hai hovanto: was, is, and will be. Haran bharan sampooran-a: the One fills and feeds all things and takes them away again, the whole flow of life.
SaaDhoo satam jaano: know that the holy are true. Pareet kaarna(n): because of their love for the One.
