Phunhay, Verse 18 — wherever the devotee goes becomes beautiful

ਜਿਥੈ ਜਾਏ ਭਗਤੁ ਸੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ॥
jithai jaa-ay bhagat so thaan suhaavanaa.
Wherever the Lord's devotee goes is a blessed, beautiful place.
ਸਗਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਸੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਾ ॥
saglay ho-ay sukh har naam Dhi-aavanaa.
All comforts are obtained, meditating on the Lord's Name.

jee-a karan jaikaar nindak mu-ay pach.
People praise and congratulate the devotee of the Lord, while the slanderers rot and die.
ਸਾਜਨ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ॥੧੮॥
saajan man aanand naanak naam jap. ||18||
Says Nanak, O friend, chant the Naam, and your mind shall be filled with bliss. ||18||

In plain words

Wherever the One's devotee goes, that place becomes beautiful.

Every comfort comes from remembering the One's Naam.

People cheer for the devotee, while the slanderers wither away and die in their own spite.

Nanak says: O friend, chant the Naam, and your mind will be filled with joy.

Wherever the One's devotee goes, the place becomes beautiful.
The deeper layer

Wherever a person who loves the One goes, that place becomes beautiful.

Jithai jaa-ay bhagat: wherever the devotee goes. So thaan suhaavanaa: that place is lovely. Saglay ho-ay sukh: every comfort comes through remembering the Naam.

Jee-a karan jaikaar: people cheer for the devotee. Nindak mu-ay pach: those who slander are eaten up by it and perish. Spite burns the one who carries it. Saajan man aanand: the friend who chants the Naam has joy in the mind.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed a place feel warmer just because of who walked in?
