Phunhay, Verse 17 — a gift that never runs out

satgur keenee daat mool na nikhuta-ee.
The True Guru has blessed me with the bounty which shall never be exhausted.
kaavahu bhunchahu sabh gurmukh chhut-ee.
Eating and consuming it, all the Gurmukhs are emancipated.
amrit naam niDhaan ditaa tus har.
The Lord, in His Mercy, has blessed me with the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam.
naanak sadaa araaDh kaday na jaaNhi mar. ||17||
O Nanak, worship and adore the Lord, who never dies. ||17||

In plain words

The True Guru has given me a gift that will never run out.

All who eat and enjoy it, turning to the Guru, are set free.

Pleased with me, the One has given me the treasure of the sweet Naam.

Nanak says: worship, always, the One who never dies.

The best gift is the one that never runs out no matter how much you take.
The deeper layer

The gift the True Guru gives never runs out, however much is shared.

Satgur keenee daat: the True Guru has given a gift. Mool na nikhuta-ee: it never, ever runs out. Khaavahu bhunchahu sabh: everyone may eat and enjoy it, and those who turn to the Guru are set free.

Amrit naam niDhaan: the treasure of the sweet Naam. Ditaa tus har: the One gave it out of kindness. The verse ends with sadaa araaDh, worship always.

A Question to Sit With

What is a gift that grows rather than shrinks when it is shared?
