Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I search for my Friend, but my Friend is already with me.

Nanak says: the Unseen One cannot be seen; the Guru shows the One to the one who turns to the Guru.

The Friend you search for is already with you.
The deeper layer

The Friend you search for is already beside you, and the Guru helps you see the One.

Ha-o dhoodhaydee sajnaa: I go looking for my Friend. Sajan maiday naal: my Friend is with me. The search outside ends with a surprise at home.

Alakh na lakhee-ai: the Unseen One cannot be seen with ordinary eyes. Gurmukh day-ay dikhaal: through the Guru, the One is shown. A gurmukh is someone who turns toward the Guru. This salok sits among Farid's saloks but carries the name Nanak.

A Question to Sit With
