ਕਿਆ ਹੰਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਧਰੇ ॥
ki-aa hans ki-aa bagulaa jaa ka-o nadar Dharay.
Who is a swan, and who is a crane, if God blesses him with His Glance of Grace?
ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਾਗਹੁ ਹੰਸੁ ਕਰੇ ॥੧੨੪॥
jay tis bhaavai naankaa kaagahu hans karay. ||124||
If it pleases Him, O Nanak, He changes a crow into a swan. ||124||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Who is a swan, and who is a crane, once the One looks on them with grace?

Nanak says: if it pleases the One, the One turns a crow into a swan.

With the One's glance of grace, a crow becomes a swan.
The deeper layer

Under the One's kind glance, a crane or even a crow can become a swan.

Ki-aa hans ki-aa bagulaa: what does it matter, swan or crane? Jaa ka-o nadar Dharay: when the One turns a glance of grace on someone. Nadar is the One's loving look.

Kaagahu hans karay: the One makes a swan out of a crow. This salok answers the two before it about cranes and swans, and carries the name Nanak. Grace is a gift that can change anyone.

A Question to Sit With
