Verse 429 of 450

Salok Sheikh Farid, Salok 128 — if you are strong, be gentle; even with little, find a way to give

ਮਤਿ ਹੋਦੀ ਹੋਇ ਇਆਣਾ ॥
mat hodee ho-ay i-aanaa.
If you are wise, be simple;
ਤਾਣ ਹੋਦੇ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਤਾਣਾ ॥
taan hoday ho-ay nitaanaa.
if you are powerful, be weak;
ਅਣਹੋਦੇ ਆਪੁ ਵੰਡਾਏ ॥
anhoday aap vandaa-ay.
and when there is nothing to share, then share with others.
ਕੋ ਐਸਾ ਭਗਤੁ ਸਦਾਏ ॥੧੨੮॥
ko aisaa bhagat sadaa-ay. ||128||
How rare is one who is known as such a devotee. ||128||

In plain words

If you are wise, be simple, like a child.

If you are strong, be gentle, as if you had no strength.

When there is little to go around, share what you have with others.

How rare is the one who is known as such a devotee.

If you are wise, be simple; if you are strong, be gentle; share even when there is little.
The deeper layer

Wisdom worn simply, strength worn gently and sharing when there is little make a rare devotee.

Mat hodee ho-ay i-aanaa: having wisdom, be like a simple child. Taan hoday ho-ay nitaanaa: having strength, be as if without strength. Anhoday aap vandaa-ay: when there is little, share yourself.

Ko aisaa bhagat sadaa-ay: rare is the one called such a devotee. Think of the strongest kid in class who helps the smaller kids carry their things instead of pushing them around. That is strength used for kindness.

A Question to Sit With

How could you share something this week, even if it is small?
