Salok Sheikh Farid, Salok 130 — if you long for the Beloved, do not break anyone's heart

ਸਭਨਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਣਿਕ ਠਾਹਣੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਮਚਾਂਗਵਾ ॥
sabhnaa man maanik thaahan mool machaaNgvaa.
The minds of all are like precious jewels; to harm them is not good at all.

jay ta-o piree-aa dee sik hi-aa-o na thaahay kahee daa. ||130||
If you desire your Beloved, then do not break anyone's heart. ||130||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone's mind is a precious jewel; hurting one is not good at all.

If you long for your Beloved, do not break anyone's heart.

If you long for the Beloved, break no one's heart.
The deeper layer

Longing for the Beloved means never breaking anyone's heart.

Sabhnaa man maanik: every mind is a jewel. Thaahan mool machaangvaa: breaking one is not good at all. Jay ta-o piree-aa dee sik: if you long for the Beloved, hi-aa-o na thaahay kahee daa, do not break anyone's heart.

This is the last of Farid's saloks. It ends where the one before it ended, with the jewel of every heart. Love for the One and gentleness toward people go together.

A Question to Sit With

How does being gentle with others bring you closer to what you love most?
