Savaiye Sri Mukhbak (Mehl 5), Verse 1 — You fill everything and every heart
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. Its Name is Truth. It is the Creator of all. It is fearless and full of love, beyond time, never born, shining on its own. And the One is found by the Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
O First Being, You Yourself are the Creator, the Cause of every cause.
You fill everything, everywhere, and You live in every heart.
You are seen all through the world; who can know how You are? You Yourself protect everyone; You are our Master.
You never die and cannot be seen; You made Yourself.
You are the One and only; there is no one else like You.
O One, You have no end and no edge. Who can think You through? You are the Father of the world, the support of every life.
Your devotees stand at Your Door, O One, and they are like You. Nanak, Your servant, says: with only one tongue, how can I describe them?
I give myself to them, again and again and again, forever.
The One made everything, fills every heart and protects all, and the devotees at the One's Door become like the One.
These verses are savaiye, praise poems, called mukhbaak, from the mouth of Guru Arjan himself. This first one opens with the Mool Mantar, the words that begin the Guru Granth Sahib. Aad purakh kartaar: the First Being, the Creator. Sagal ghat rahi-o bi-aapay: present in every heart. Jagat pitaa: the Father of the world.
The closing lines come back in the next three verses too. Bhagat dar tul barahm samsar: the devotees at the Door are equal to the One. Bal bal bal bal sad balihaar: I give myself, again and again. Think of how a child who stays near a loving parent starts to speak and smile like them.
Where have you felt something much bigger than yourself quietly holding things together?
