Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 8 — Maya bows down

ਕਬੀਰ ਆਈ ਮੁਝਹਿ ਪਹਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਭੇਸ ॥
kabeer aa-ee mujheh peh anik karay kar bhays.
Kabir, she came to me in various forms and disguises.
ਹਮ ਰਾਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਨੇ ਉਨਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥੮॥
ham raakhay gur aapnay un keeno aadays. ||8||
My Guru saved me, and now she bows humbly to me. ||8||

In plain words

Kabir says: she came to me in many different forms and disguises — Maya, the pull of the world.

My Guru kept me safe, and now she bows down to me.

Kept safe by the Guru, you are no longer ruled by the pull of the world.
The deeper layer

When the Guru keeps you safe, the pull of the world bows down instead of ruling you.

The "she" is Maya, the pull of wanting and worldly things, pictured as a visitor who arrives anik karay kar bhays, in many forms and disguises. Ham raakhay gur aapnay: my own Guru protected me. Un keeno aadays: she bowed in greeting. The pull that once ruled now stands aside.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that used to control you that has less power over you now?
