Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 14 — wonders everywhere, yet empty

ਕਬੀਰ ਜਹ ਜਹ ਹਉ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਕਉਤਕ ਠਾਓ ਠਾਇ ॥
kabeer jah jah ha-o firi-o ka-utak thaa-o thaa-ay.
Kabir, wherever I go, I see wonders everywhere.
ਇਕ ਰਾਮ ਸਨੇਹੀ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਊਜਰੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਭਾਂਇ ॥੧੪॥
ik raam sanayhee baahraa oojar mayrai bhaaN-ay. ||14||
But without the devotees of the One Lord, it is all wilderness to me. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Kabir says: wherever I have wandered, I have seen wonders in place after place.

But without those who love the One Lord, it is all a wilderness to me.

A dazzling place feels empty without people who love the One.
The deeper layer

Without people who love the One, even a world full of wonders feels empty.

Ka-utak means marvels, amazing sights; oojar means a wilderness, an empty waste. Kabir finds wonders everywhere, yet without raam sanayhee, those who love the One, every place feels barren. Friends in that love matter more than any spectacle.

A Question to Sit With

Would you rather see something amazing alone, or something ordinary with someone you love?
