Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 15 — the little hut of the good

ਕਬੀਰ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਝੁੰਗੀਆ ਭਲੀ ਭਠਿ ਕੁਸਤੀ ਗਾਉ ॥
kabeer santan kee jhungee-aa bhalee bhath kustee gaa-o.
Kabir, the dwelling of the Saints is good; the dwelling of the unrighteous burns like an oven.
ਆਗਿ ਲਗਉ ਤਿਹ ਧਉਲਹਰ ਜਿਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥੧੫॥
aag laga-o tih Dha-ulhar jih naahee har ko naa-o. ||15||
Those mansions in which the Lord's Name is not chanted might just as well burn down. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Kabir says: the little hut of the saints is good; the village of the dishonest burns like an oven.

A mansion where the Lord's Naam is not spoken might as well burn down.

What lives inside a home matters more than how grand it is.
The deeper layer

What lives inside a home matters more than how grand it is.

Santan kee jhungee-aa: the little hut of the saints. Bhath kustee gaa-o: the village of the dishonest is like a hot oven. Dha-ulhar is a great white mansion. Aag laga-o: let fire take it, a strong way of saying that a mansion without the Naam is worth nothing. A place is measured by love and remembering, never by its size or its owner's wealth.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a place feel good to be in, no matter its size?
