Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 17 — the smell of garlic

ਕਬੀਰ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜੈਸੀ ਲਸਨ ਕੀ ਖਾਨਿ ॥
kabeer saakat aisaa hai jaisee lasan kee khaan.
Kabir, the faithless cynic is like a piece of garlic.
ਕੋਨੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਖਾਈਐ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੧੭॥
konay baithay khaa-ee-ai pargat ho-ay nidaan. ||17||
Even if you eat it sitting in a corner, it becomes obvious to everyone. ||17||

In plain words

Kabir says: the one who has turned away from the One is like a clove of garlic.

Even if you eat it sitting in a corner, in the end everyone knows.

What you are on the inside shows on the outside in the end.
The deeper layer

What is inside a person shows in the end, however well it is hidden.

The saakat, the person turned away from the One, is like lasan, garlic. Konay baithay khaa-ee-ai: you may eat it hidden in a corner. Pargat ho-ay nidaan: in the end its smell gives it away. What a person carries inside cannot stay secret.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how what is inside a person shows over time?
