Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 21 — not from many friends

kabeer sookh na ayNh jug karahi jo bahutai meet.
Kabir, peace does not come in this world by making lots of friends.
jo chit raakhahi ayk si-o tay sukh paavahi neet. ||21||
Those who keep their consciousness focused on the One Lord shall find eternal peace. ||21||

In plain words

Kabir says: in this world, peace does not come from making lots of friends.

Those who keep their mind on the One find peace every day.

Lasting peace comes from a steady center, not from a big crowd.
The deeper layer

Lasting peace comes from a heart fixed on the One, more than from a crowd of friends.

Bahutai meet: many friends. Peace does not come from their number. Jo chit raakhahi ayk si-o: those who keep their mind with the One. Tay sukh paavahi neet: they find peace always. Friendship is good; security rests in the One.

A Question to Sit With

Where does your calm come from when things around you get noisy?
