Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 24 — whom to love

ਕਬੀਰ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਰਾਮੁ ॥
kabeer taa si-o pareet kar jaa ko thaakur raam.
Kabir, be in love with only that one, whose Master is the Lord.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਰਾਜੇ ਭੂਪਤੀ ਆਵਹਿ ਕਉਨੇ ਕਾਮ ॥੨੪॥
pandit raajay bhooptee aavahi ka-unay kaam. ||24||
The Pandits, the religious scholars, kings and landlords - what good is love for them? ||24||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Kabir says: love the one whose Master is the Lord.

Scholars, kings and great landlords — what use is loving them?

Give your love to those who love the One, more than to the merely powerful.
The deeper layer

Give your love to those whose Master is the One, more than to the powerful.

Taa si-o pareet kar jaa ko thaakur raam: love the one whose Master is the One. Pandit raajay bhooptee: scholars, kings and lords of the land, here standing for worldly rank of every kind, in any tradition. Loving them only for their power brings nothing that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think chasing important people's approval leaves us feeling empty?
