Verse 3 of 7

Savaiye in Praise of Guru Ram Das (Bhatt Mathura), Verse 3 — singing together, hearts get what they long for

santat hee satsangat sang surang ratay jas gaavat hai.
The Saints dwell in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; imbued with pure celestial love, they sing the Lord's Praises.
Dharam panth Dhari-o DharneeDhar aap rahay liv Dhaar na Dhaavat hai.
The Support of the Earth has established this Path of Dharma; He Himself remains lovingly attuned to the Lord, and does not wander in distraction.
mathuraa bhan bhaag bhalay unH kay man ichhat hee fal paavat hai.
So speaks Mat'huraa: those blessed with good fortune receive the fruits of their minds' desires.
Those who focus their consciousness on the Guru's Feet, they do not fear the judgement of Dharamraj. ||3||

In plain words

The saints stay always in the Sangat, dyed deep in love, singing the One's praise.

The Support of the Earth has set up this path of right living. The Guru stays tuned to the One and does not wander.

Mathura says: their luck is good. They receive the fruit their hearts long for.

Those who keep their mind on the Guru's feet have no fear of the judge of the dead.

Rest your mind at the Guru's feet, and fear has nowhere to sit.
The deeper layer

Those who sing in the Sangat and keep their mind on the Guru's feet receive what their hearts long for, and fear of death's judge leaves them.

The saints gather in the satsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Soaked in love, they sing praise. The Guru, the Support of the Earth, has set down a path of right living and stays tuned to the One.

Mathura says those who walk this path receive man ichhat hee fal, the fruit their heart longs for.

The last line speaks of rav kay sut, the son of the sun, a name for Dharamraj, the judge of the dead in old stories. Those whose hearts rest at the Guru's feet have no fear of him. Think of a child who is not scared of the dark because a parent is right there.

A Question to Sit With

When has being part of a group made you braver than you would be alone?
