Verse 5 of 7

Savaiye in Praise of Guru Ram Das (Bhatt Mathura), Verse 5 — what seekers searched ages for, freely given

jaa ka-o mun Dhayaan Dharai firat sagal jug kabahu ka ko-oo paavai aatam pargaas ka-o.
For His Sake, the silent sages meditated and focused their consciousness, wandering all the ages through; rarely, if ever, their souls were enlightened.

bayd banee sahit biranch jas gaavai jaa ko siv mun geh na tajaat kabilaas kaN-u.
In the Hymns of the Vedas, Brahma sang His Praises; for His Sake, Shiva the silent sage held his place on the Kailaash Mountain.
jaa kou jogee jatee siDh saaDhik anayk tap jataa joot bhaykh kee-ay firat udaas ka-o.
For His Sake, the Yogis, celibates, Siddhas and seekers, the countless sects of fanatics with matted hair wear religious robes, wandering as detached renunciates.
so tin satgur sukh bhaa-ay kirpaa Dhaaree jee-a naam kee badaa-ee da-ee gur raamdaas ka-o. ||5||
That True Guru, by the Pleasure of His Will, showered His Mercy upon all beings, and blessed Guru Raam Daas with the Glorious Greatness of the Naam. ||5||

In plain words

For the sake of the One, silent sages sat in meditation, wandering through all the ages. Only rarely did anyone find the light inside.

Brahma sang the One's praise with the hymns of the Vedas. For the One's sake, Shiva the sage held still and did not leave Mount Kailash.

For the One's sake, yogis, celibates, people of great powers and countless seekers grew matted hair, put on special robes and wandered, cut off from the world.

That True Guru, in joy and goodwill, showed mercy to all beings and gave Guru Ram Das the greatness of the Naam.

The greatest treasure comes as a gift.
The deeper layer

What seekers searched for through all the ages, the True Guru gave freely: the greatness of the Naam, to Guru Ram Das.

It gathers the whole searching world. Silent sages meditated age after age, and only rarely did light break open inside them. Brahma sang praise in the Vedas, the old holy books. Shiva sat still on Mount Kailash. Yogis and wanderers with long matted hair left home and roamed.

The verse honors all of them. Their effort was sincere. They are named as people pointing toward the same One, not as rivals.

Then comes the turn. The true Guru, happy to give, poured out mercy on everyone. And the Guru gave Guru Ram Das naam kee badaa-ee, the greatness of the Naam.

Think of a team that trains for years to find a treasure. Then someone opens a door and hands it over. The gift was received.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable you received as a gift?
