Savaiye in Praise of Guru Arjun (Bhatt Mathura), Verse 5 — a light kindled in a dark time

In the deep darkness of this world, the One came shining, as Guru Arjun.
Mathura says: whoever drinks the nectar of the Naam has millions of pains taken far away.
O mind, do not stray from this path. Do not think the One and the Guru are two.
The Perfect One has shown itself plainly, and lives in the heart of Guru Arjun.
A light shone out in a dark time. Mahaa tam means great darkness. Into it, the One appeared, ujaagar, shining, as Guru Arjun. Think of a lamp switched on in a dark room. The room is the same, but now you can see.
The bard Mathura says those who drink the nectar of the Naam have millions of pains lifted away.
Then he speaks to his own mind: do not leave this path. Bhayd bibhayd na jaan bee-a-o means "do not think they are two." The One and the True Guru are one. The Guru is a clear window onto the One. The Perfect One has made a home in Guru Arjun's heart.
