Savaiye in Praise of Guru Arjun (Bhatt Mathura), Verse 7 — know the Guru and become like him
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In the ocean of this dark age, the Naam of the One has come in the form of Guru Arjun, to carry the world across.
Pain and poverty are taken away from the one in whose heart the Saint lives.
He is the pure form of the endless One. Besides him, there is no other.
Whoever knows him in thought and word becomes just like him.
He fills the earth, the sky and the nine regions of the world. He is the light of the One in a form.
Mathura says: there is no difference between the One and the Guru. Guru Arjun is the One, plain to see.
Whoever knows the Guru in thought and word grows to be like him. Man bach jin jaani-a-o bha-ya-o tih samsar so-ee means "whoever knows him in thought and word becomes just like him." Think of how you start to talk and act like a friend you spend lots of time with. Loving someone good slowly shapes you.
In this dark age, the Naam has shown itself in the form of Guru Arjun, to lift the world. When the Saint lives in your heart, pain and poverty go away.
He is nirmal bhaykh, the pure form of the endless One. His light, jot savroopee, fills the earth, the sky, and the nine regions of the world.
This is the last verse of the bard Mathura's set. It ends with his favorite words: kachh bhayd nahee, "there is no difference." Guru Arjun shows the One plainly.
Who do you admire so much that you have started to become a little like them?
