Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 11 — What Makes a Life Worth Living

janmay kaa fal ki-aa ganee jaaN har bhagat na bhaa-o.
What should I account as the rewards of this human life, if one does not feel love and devotion to the Lord?
paiDhaa khaaDhaa baad hai jaaN man doojaa bhaa-o.
Wearing clothes and eating food is useless, if the mind is filled with the love of duality.
vaykhan sunnaa jhooth hai mukh jhoothaa aalaa-o.
Seeing and hearing is false, if one speaks lies.
naanak naam salaahi too hor ha-umai aava-o jaa-o. ||11||
O Nanak, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord; everything else is coming and going in egotism. ||11||

In plain words

What is the fruit of being born, if there is no love and devotion for the One?

Wearing clothes and eating food are wasted, if the mind loves something other than the One.

Seeing and hearing are false, if the mouth speaks lies.

Nanak says: praise the Naam; everything else is coming and going in ego.

A life bears fruit when love and devotion for the One are in it.
The deeper layer

A life is measured by the love and devotion in it.

Janmay kaa fal ki-aa ganee: what is the fruit of being born, har bhagat na bhaa-o, if there is no devotion and love for the One? Paidhaa khaadhaa baad: clothes and food are wasted when the mind holds doojaa bhaa-o, love for something other than the One.

Ha-umai, ego, the feeling of being a separate self, keeps a person aava-o jaa-o, coming and going. Naam salaahi: praising the Naam is the way out.

A Question to Sit With

If comfort alone does not make a life full, what makes yours feel full to you?
