Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 4), Salok 103 — the song that lifts you

har parabh sachaa sohilaa gurmukh naam govind.
For the Gurmukh, the true Song of Praise is to chant the Name of the Lord God.
an-din naam salaahnaa har japi-aa man aanand.
Chanting the Praises of the Lord, their minds are in ecstasy.
vadbhaagee har paa-i-aa pooran parmaanand.
By great good fortune, they find the Lord, the Embodiment of perfect, supreme bliss.
jan naanak naam sahaali-aa bahurh na man tan bhang. ||3||
Servant Nanak praises the Naam, the Name of the Lord; no obstacle will block his mind or body. ||3||

In plain words

For one who faces the Guru, the true song of praise is the Naam of the One, the Lord of the World.

Praising the Naam day and night, remembering the One, the mind is full of joy.

By great good fortune, they find the One, perfect and highest joy.

The One's servant Nanak says: I praise the Naam, and nothing will break my mind or body again.

The truest song is the Naam, praised day and night.
The deeper layer

Praising the Naam day and night fills the mind with a joy nothing can break.

Sohilaa is a song of praise, and here the song is the Naam itself. Man aanand: the mind is full of joy. Pooran parmaanand is perfect, highest joy, found vadbhaagee, by great good fortune. Bahurh na man tan bhang: nothing breaks mind or body again — an inner wholeness.

A Question to Sit With

What is a "song" — a thought or phrase — you would like playing in your heart all day?
