Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 4), Salok 104 — the Friend beside you all along
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I am in love with my Beloved; how can I meet my dear Friend?
I am searching for that Friend, made beautiful by Truth.
The True Guru is my friend; if I meet the Guru, I will give this mind to the Guru.
The Guru has shown me my Beloved, the One, my Friend, the Creator.
Nanak says: I was searching for my Beloved; the True Guru showed me the Beloved has been with me all along.
The Beloved the soul searches for has been near all along, and the True Guru shows it.
The soul searches everywhere for the Beloved, ha-o dhoodhaydee, "I keep searching." The True Guru is called maidaa mit, my friend, and the Guru points to the Beloved: satgur naal dikhaali-aa, the True Guru showed the Beloved is right with me. It is the same movement as the rainbird's — the seeking ends in a nearness that was never absent. The Friend and the Creator are one.
Has something you searched everywhere for ever turned out to be close by the whole time?
