Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 4), Salok 114 — everything becomes devotion

The Gurmukh laughs, and the Gurmukh cries.
je gurmukh karay saa-ee bhagat hovai.
Whatever the Gurmukh does, is devotional worship.
gurmukh hovai so karay veechaar.
Whoever becomes Gurmukh contemplates the Lord.
gurmukh naanak paavai paar. ||14||
The Gurmukh, O Nanak, crosses over to the other shore. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who faces the Guru laughs, and the one who faces the Guru cries.

Whatever the one who faces the Guru does becomes devotion.

Whoever faces the Guru thinks deeply about the One.

Nanak says: the one who faces the Guru crosses to the other shore.

Facing the Guru, even laughing and crying become devotion.
The deeper layer

For one who faces the Guru, every part of life, laughter and tears included, becomes devotion.

Gurmukh hasai gurmukh rovai: the one turned toward the Guru laughs and cries. Saa-ee bhagat hovai: all of it is devotion. Devotion fills ordinary life, tears included. Paavai paar, crossing to the far shore, is a picture of freedom from the restless ocean of the world.

A Question to Sit With

Can something as simple as laughing or crying feel meaningful to you?
