Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 4), Salok 126 — from restless fire to sanctuary

Within the self-willed manmukhs is the fire of desire; their hunger does not depart.
moh kutamb sabh koorh hai koorh rahi-aa laptaa-ay.
Emotional attachments to relatives are totally false; they remain engrossed in falsehood.
an-din chintaa chintvai chintaa baDhaa jaa-ay.
Night and day, they are troubled by anxiety; bound to anxiety, they depart.
jaman maran na chuk-ee ha-umai karam kamaa-ay.
Their comings and goings in reincarnation never end; they do their deeds in egotism.
gur sarnaa-ee ubrai naanak la-ay chhadaa-ay. ||26||
But in the Guru's Sanctuary, they are saved, O Nanak, and set free. ||26||

In plain words

Inside the one who follows only their own mind burns the fire of wanting; their hunger does not go away.

Clinging to family is all false, and they stay wrapped up in what is false.

Day and night they worry, and tied up in worry, they leave this world.

Their coming and going in birth and death does not end, because they act from ego.

Nanak says: in the Guru's shelter they are saved, and the One sets them free.

In the Guru's shelter, the fire of wanting is put out and we are set free.
The deeper layer

The fire of wanting and the knot of worry are undone in the Guru's shelter.

Tisnaa ag is the fire of wanting; bhukh na jaa-ay, a hunger that does not leave; chintaa, worry, day and night. Jaman maran na chuk-ee: the coming and going of birth and death goes on while a person acts from ha-umai, ego.

The turn comes at the end: gur sarnaa-ee ubrai, in the Guru's shelter one is lifted out, and la-ay chhadaa-ay, set free.
