Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 4), Salok 128 — the Naam that lights the path
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The Perfect Guru has planted the Naam firmly in me, and it has cleared away my doubt from inside.
Singing the praise of the One's Name, the path is lit up and shown.
My ego, the feeling of being a separate self, is beaten; I stay tuned in love to the One alone, and the Naam lives inside me.
Following the Guru's teaching, death cannot even look at me; I have melted into the True Name.
The Creator fills everything; whoever the One likes, the One joins to the Naam.
Nanak says: I live by saying the Naam. Without the Naam, I would die in a moment.
When the Naam settles inside, doubt clears and the path ahead is lit.
Gur poorai har naam dirhaa-i-aa: the Perfect Guru planted the Naam firmly. Chaanan mag daykhaa-i-aa: the path is shown by light. Ha-umai maar ayk liv laagee: with the ego beaten, the mind stays tuned to the One. Sabh aapay aap vartai kartaa: the Creator fills everything.
The last line is a lover's line. Bin naavai khin mar jaa-i-aa: without the Naam I would die in a moment. It is longing, the way someone says they cannot live without the person they love.
What is something that makes you feel wide awake and fully alive?
