Even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, O Nanak, if my Husband Lord is with me. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without my Master, I would throw my silk and satin clothes into the fire.

Nanak says: even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, if I am with You, my Husband.

*Being near the One makes even the dust beautiful.*
The deeper layer

Fine clothes mean nothing without love. Love makes even dust beautiful.

Dhanee vihoonaa paat patambar — without my Master, silk and satin are worthless. The verse says it would throw them in the fire. That strong picture shows how little fancy things count next to the One.

Then it turns around. Dhoorhee vich ludand-rhee sohaa — even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, if my Beloved is with me. Think of a kid in muddy clothes, grinning, holding a parent's hand. No fancy outfit could look happier.

Being near the One is what makes a life beautiful.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt happiest even without any fancy or expensive things?
