Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 15 — Blind Minds and Empty Pride
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Those whose minds are completely blind do not keep their word.
With a blind mind and the heart's lotus turned upside down, they look very ugly.
Some know how to speak and understand what they are told; those people are wise and beautiful.
Some know nothing of the inner music, of holy learning, or of the joy of song; they cannot tell sweet from bitter.
Some have no idea of perfection, wisdom or understanding; they never find the mystery of the Word.
Nanak says: such people are like donkeys — they have no goodness, yet they are full of pride.
Pride with nothing good inside it makes a person look foolish.
Man anDhai: a blind mind, with the heart's lotus turned upside down so it cannot open to the light. Beside them stand those who kahi jaanan kahi-aa bujhan, who know how to speak and understand what is said.
Some know nothing of naad, the inner music, and nothing of the mystery of the akhar, the Word. The harshest picture comes last: tay nar asal khar, such people are like donkeys, because bin gun garab karant, they are proud with no goodness at all. The problem named is the pride.
Has pride ever made you close up and miss something you could have learned or loved?
