Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 5), Salok 146 — choosing the one current

ਦੂਜੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਇਕਸ ਸਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
doojee chhod kuvaatarhee ikas sa-o chit laa-ay.
Forsake duality and the ways of evil; focus your consciousness on the One Lord.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਹਣਿ ਲੁੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੰਦੜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੬॥
doojai bhaaveeN naankaa vahan lurhHaNdarhee jaa-ay. ||16||
In the love of duality, O Nanak, the mortals are being washed downstream. ||16||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Leave the other, crooked path, and set your mind on the One alone.

Nanak says: in love with the other, people are washed away downstream.

*A divided heart gets swept along; a focused one is carried home.*
The deeper layer

A heart set on the One stays steady; a heart in love with "the other" gets swept away.

Doojee chhod kuvaatarhee: leave the other, crooked path. Ikas sa-o chit laa-ay: set your mind on the One. Doojai bhaavee: in love with the other, with anything put in the One's place. Such a person is carried off downstream, like something caught in a flood.

A Question to Sit With

What happens when you try to focus on one thing instead of many at once?
